Hainan (海南) is the southernmost province of the People’s Republic of China, consisting chiefly of Hainan Island and its surrounding islets in the South China Sea. Covering approximately 35,400 km², it is China’s smallest province by land area and yet home to over 10 million residents (2020 census). Haikou, on the island’s northern coast, serves as the political and economic capital, while the resort city of Sanya at the southern tip is famed for its sandy beaches and year-round sunshine
Hainan enjoys a true tropical monsoon climate, with average annual temperatures around 23–25 °C and abundant rainfall from May through October. Nearly two-thirds of the province is covered in lush forests and tropical rainforests, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Inland attractions include the volcanic peaks of the Wuzhishan range, pristine waterfalls, and large-scale forest parks, while the coastline boasts coral reefs, sandy bays like Yalong Bay, and marine reserves.
Traditionally driven by agriculture—particularly tropical fruits (pineapple, mango), rubber, coconut and silkworm cultivation—Hainan has in recent years shifted heavily toward tourism, healthcare, and modern services. In April 2018, China’s central leadership designated Hainan as a pilot free-trade zone, with plans to convert the entire island into the country’s only free-trade port by 2025, aiming to attract foreign investment and foster duty-free shopping on an unprecedented scale.
As a cultural crossroads, Hainan is home to the indigenous Li and Miao ethnic groups, whose traditional villages and festivals dot the island’s interior. Coastal areas cater to global travelers with luxury resorts, golf courses, and watersports. Annual events—such as the Boao Forum for Asia, international surfing and sailing competitions, and golf tournaments—reinforce Hainan’s role as both a domestic retreat and an international conference hub.
Whether you seek sun-kissed beaches, tropical adventure, or a front-row seat to China’s next economic experiment, Hainan offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and forward-looking opportunity.
